And, my all-time favorite, in honor of my mother’s birthday today:

“Why is it that people get married?
Because we need a witness to our lives.
There’s a billion people on the planet.
What does any one life really mean?
But in a marriage, you’re promising to care about everything…
The good things, the bad things, the terrible things, the mundane things,
All of it… all the time, every day.
You’re saying “Your life will not go unnoticed because I will notice it.
Your life will not go unwitnessed – because I will be your witness.”

  1. What a birthday gift! All so true, and when my smiling clean husband (2 showers that day) picked me up at the Culpeper train station after my four days with your sister in NYC, I smiled all over again. A true witness to my life with a card in his hand that said as much about me. Talk about a late bloomin’ bride…having married him at 60.

  2. I love this. Bob and I have been together for 35 years, and it’s so true–caring about everything. And being kind to one another.
