Marriage is Nutritious. Who knew?
ByIf Husband was still single, he would subsist on cottage cheese (with occasional fruit mixed in), cereal and shrimp. I am no better. I would live off pasta with a pound of parmesan cheese grated into it with a smattering of broccoli (for the color). In fact, when I think back to my many single days, I am surprised I am still alive. I know I had protein in there somewhere – probably sometime in 1992.
But, as soon as we got married, nutrition moved into the house.
And, not just any old balanced meals either. We’re talking flax seed, grilled fish, steamed vegetables, whole wheat everything, skim milk, apples for dessert and vitamins, and only the really, really good wine. I now regularly crave salmon and asparagus. I get quite cranky when balanced nutrition is not on the menu.
I also did what so many women swear they will never do – I took on the traditional wife role of doing all the cooking. Funny, how quickly we assume those roles. I would have bet money I wouldn’t have. Ah, well.
Additionally, when the nutrition (and cooking) moved in, so did the taste. We have gotten quite snobby about our food. It was like gourmand taste was handed over with the marriage vows. And, if I can’t cook it better, we don’t order it off the menu in our fancy restaurants.
So, I cook. A lot. I’m not sure what came first – the cooking or the appreciation of food. If it was the cooking, then I can see why I would want to spend my time on something worth eating. And, if it was the desire for quality food, then the cooking always guarantees you are in control of the outcome. Who knows?
But, I have a theory. Better alcohol.
You see, there I was, a swinging single, minding my own business. Eating take-out sushi (there you go – protein!) and sipping lite beer. When suddenly I am married and cooking almost every night, pulling out of somewhere in the brain how to use a bain marie, of course, all the while sipping French sauvignon blanc. Don’t know how I ever learned how to use a bain marie, but there you go. Personally, I think the switch to better wine might be the cause for this sudden knowledge. In fact, I think I’ll pour a glass now. All in the name of better nutrition, ya know.

I’ve never even heard of a bain marie…I obviously need to start drinking better wine! Thanks for the tip.

It’s also known as a “french oven” where one pot sits in another pot that has an inch or two of water (which is boiling). It’s more complex than I normally like to go — but it’s the best way to melt chocolate. And, that is something I am NOT giving up.

Maybe it’s a Southern thing, but my family always called it a double boiler. Maybe it’s because when we were growing up, we never even had wine in the house!

Oh, yes! That’s the other name for it. I don’t think we ever had wine either. I remember a bottle of Jack Daniels collecting dust somewhere in the kitchen…
