Men and Their Equipment – What Gives?

By Suzanne

So, what is it about men and electronics?

(Come on, admit it. You thought I was going to write about their other equipment, didn’t you? Sorry to disappoint.)

I didn’t realize when I got married that I would be inheriting an electrical graveyard.  I mean, we have at least four semi-dead laptops, two to three semi-dead computer towers, several printers, cables out the whazoo, some old cell phones, cordless phones, and things I have no idea what they once were, piled in our garage. Just sitting there. Gathering dust. Waiting for something to happen. Like a row of wallflowers. Even my really-dead, old iPod is still sitting in the basket by the hall. (It weighs about as much as my purse, so I don’t want it if it ever does get revived. I have a shiny new (light) iPod now.)

Every once in a while, Husband threatens to revive some of these or connect them all somehow or tap into their unused power or….whatever. Hope springs eternal for electronic equipment in our house.

Because, you see, Husband believes he can fix it. Or at least learn something about how to fix it. So, “it” – whether an iPod or five year old cell phone — deserves to be saved.

The fact that he will never spend the time on any of these pieces of metal, wiring and gizmos seems lost on Husband. It could be that he believes as long as they are just there, he is buying the time to fix them, too.

Or, possibly it was the fact Husband won second place in the International Science Fair when he was just a mere lad of 15 for building a computer. Hey it was the 1960s, folks, so that was quite a feat! These early kudos may have given him a complex that he must fix everything electronic now. Like it’s his job.

(For the record, we still have the computer he built. It’s the size of a refrigerator and sits in our garage. I think it adds one plus one. It sits alongside all the others. I hope it’s not getting a “fat” complex. It’s hard to be the biggest girl in the room.)

Or perhaps, Husband is just a softie at heart. He can’t bear to send something to the grave prematurely. Let’s hope I get as much consideration when my parts start wearing out.
